How do you get people to do what you need them to do? It comes down to a choice. You can hope that your AUTHORITY as a leader will be enough to motivate them to act. Or you can build INFLUENCE with your team so that they more seriously consider what it is you ask them to do.
In episode 9 of the Decide to Lead podcast Russ makes the case for leading others by building influence with them. In the show he uses clips from interviews with Simon Sinek, Howard Schultz, and Keith Ferrazzi to make his case.
Keith makes the case in the episode that even CEOs of very large organizations struggle with getting people to do the things they ask them to do. Simon talks about the example of the US military and the relationship that exists between leaders and soldiers and how trust is something that must be built.
Howard Schultz wraps up the show talking about the value of showing vulnerability as a leader. Russ says he's noticing very few leaders in corporate America are intentionally showing vulnerability and working to build influence so that their teams trust them, collaborate, and are willing to change as needed to help accomplish extraordinary results.
This show will cause you to think about whether you're leaning too heavily on the AUTHORITY that comes from your position and how you can build more INFLUENCE as the leader of a team.
